The Water Pump

Planted in the ground a lifetime ago,

it holds more life than a tree’s branches of a century’s age

and from it flows fables;

All you have to do is pull the lever there

Once with such ease would that lever rise to release stories

for hands stained with orange soil

Do you hear now how it shrieks with resistance,

much like a tree being dug up by the roots,
as polished fingers tempt it to tell its tales?

This poem was based on the rusty old water pump that stands beside my family's abandoned farmhouse, and the memories equated with it.
