Recollecting
I flashback to my childhood
Not when I played with my friends on the see-saw
Or having at it at the mall
Nor my first bike at 4.
No to when I had no clue what to do
You left me in the time before I could learn
Before I could even say ‘Daddy, I love you.’
No one knows why I never cried
Now those sleepless nights have come.
Only pictures to make me smile
The smile followed with dry tears
I can’t release anymore grief
My life has been ridden with it
Now’s the time to move on.
But no you drag me back
All I do is try to recollect mental movies
The ones where there’s background music
Just the piano and a church choir.
Now this smile has been soaked
But why now do you call to me
Never has this hurt as much
All I have wanted was to meet you.
When I hear the church bells ring behind
In my pure white dress
I’ll smile and drive off
Waiting to cry until she’s out of sight
For you were the one to have walked with me.
Now with having heard stories
Examined your face more clearly
Seeing why some cry at my sight
I am you in countless ways
The eyes, butter-eating, and Barney Rubble feet alike
All have made me the one I am today
So may you always be there in my mind
If not here by side.
