You carved a picture in the sand and
willed life to be like that.
I ran through it and laughed, my giggle drowned out by the roaring sea.
What’s that supposed to be? I ask.

I ran through the waves, soaked through to the skin, singing my words
where no one else could hear
but the sea, who swallowed them whole.
And you laughed and ran past me, dark makeup casting shadows on your eyes.
What’s that supposed to mean? You ask,
hair whipping in the wind.

You carved a picture in the sand and
willed life to be like that.
I scribbled my down my soul and
willed the world to comprehend.

Different ways of expressing our inner selves,
each to preoccupied to fully understand the other,
Each trying to reach out, the world too big to wrap our arms around,
and the town too small to hold us both
