Trophy Boy
Boy beams effulgently
Pride emanating from his eyes
A trophy gleams beneath
His corpulent fingers
His father notices the shine
Asking how he earned it
His son replies, "I got
Second place at the bee"
The man contorts his smile
Shifting into a grimace
"Only second?
How disappointing"
The boy tries to flee
To his race car bed
But his father intercepts him
Clutching the prize now
He flings it at the boy
"Worthless."
The boy's tears fall
On the cracked surface
Of his trophy,
Creating tributaries
Born from the ocean
Of his shattered exuberance
