There are places in the world
Where the unthinkable occurs
Places silenced by fear
In which the future is unsure
How did we get here?
To a place without love and compassion
Where time stands still
Where hearts are like an empty mansion
Breath short lived
Innocent blood drawn
Promises broken
Trust defeated
Beauty slaughtered
Tears in the jungle
For lives unlived, spirits unheard

The author's comments:
I wrote this after I learned about the genocide in Cambodia. I was so passionate about the situations, and felt impacted by the killings that I wanted to write a poem in honor of the innocent lives lost.
