Hall Pass
She sat, planted firmly in her chair
Knots twisting in her stomach like uncombed hair
differential equations speeding over her bowed head
akin to dripping snow that weary branches shed.
It was the agonizing wait for the camera flash
A burst of darkness amplified by her very rash
insistence to brave too little and hear too much
consequences of using cowardice as a crutch.
She thought of hurried steps, pushing her hair away
Darting eyes bracing for a rope about to fray
The timid edge of an animal, betrayed
by a predator unaware of his prey.
She sat, planted firmly in her chair
Running in circles, circles of imagined despair
Finding no way to muster the courage to walk ahead
She closed her eyes and screamed instead.
