I knew her heart would be the death of her.
the sirens atop the ambulance
collide with my racing heart.
"will she survive?"
"can she see another day?"
speak panicking voices.
a blur of cloaked bodies
run to and fro beside me.
each time one passes,
I feel another breath
slip past my cold lips.
"get me the defibrillator!"
"what's happening?"
shock after shock-
nothing.
the green line stops spiking
and goes flat forever.
"I knew her heart would be the death of her"
was the last thing I heard
before I went into a state
of permanent, peaceful slumber.
