The Goodbye
The constant beeping of monitors interrupts each thought that picks at my mind.
A cold bed and a shell of a man lay before me,
And I know it is time to say goodbye.
One by one,
kisses are placed on foreheads,
and love is whispered into ears.
Little fragments of memories scatter and settle down into the dusty corners of the room
And into the fibers of a thin bed sheet, which hangs tenderly over wrinkled skin and bone.
Every emotion trickles through my blood and flows down into my fingertips.
Something stings my heart and tears begin to coat my wide eyes,
I melt my eyelashes together and feel the drops soak back in,
But one escapes,
And glistens as it trails across my cheek,
Revealing itself to the other eyes in the room.
When everything unlocks and footsteps creak out the door,
The numbness slowly peels away,
And pure, suppressed sadness wafts out,
Traveling through the dimly lit waiting room
And out into the rest of the day.
