What is that?

The buzz in the background

The clatter of my shoes on the deck is no match

This familiar, but unknown sound in the distance

The hum of the stereo can’t overpower it

This sound is comforting, yet teetering on insanity

The dim light of the nearly full moon casts a shadow on me

This strange noise varies, and it is all around me

The whisper of leaves is not as beautiful

The volume goes from loud to a silent plea

The milky colors of pink, purple, and blue paint the sky

The click, from the trees, is growing stronger

The sky’s hues turn darker

What is this sound?

The sound is of nature

It is the deafening hello of the crickets

The author's comments:
The inspiration of this poem was simple, I was outside and I heard the crickets chirping. The words started forming in my head and I ran for paper and pen. I hope people will understand the symbolic meaning of the crickets being louder than everything else. They are louder because they represent the undying and unmatched beauty and simplicity of nature.
