Laughing at a Funeral
What a bizarre world?
We’re caged by societal standards built over centuries
And those who try to escape are ridiculed,
Called insane for questioning the very cell that we are trapped in.
Tradition and fear cut the stems of creativity
As soon as it blooms from between the concrete cracks.
Although they were initially built upon logic and reason
The fear of disapproval has hindered advancement.
People wonder how historical travesties occur
Yet they perpetuate unreasonable standards without question.
Have you ever thought about laughing at a funeral?
About changing the status quo?
Maybe one day the dreamers will reign supreme
Initiating freedom and innovation globally.
But for now we can only spread the seeds of change
And Pour a constant stream of ideas over them.
Before we know it, the outstretched branches of change
Will eclipse the overgrowth of conformity

Hi, I'm Aidan O'Leary, a Senior at San Dieguito Academy planning on attending UCLA in the fall for Computer Science. I thought this piece encapsulated the feeling of unimportance which I often felt as I completed work for classes and serves as a call to action for students and teachers to engage in more thought-provoking and creative ways to learn and participate in new topics.
