Rules are the book that everyone follows
No one is making you follow,
But
Everyone follows
There's only one rule here
Men first, women next
No one speaks this, shared in only whispers
Men earn the money, women get less
Men at work, women at home
Men talk, women listen
I’m Blair
I have one older brother, Blake
Blake is
the smart one
the funny one
the athletic one
the loved one…
If you saw my parents and Blake,
you would think he’s an
only
child
My friends always tell me,
“How is your brother so perfect?”
I ask myself the same question
Is it because he is a boy?
The rules kill me
He is already way ahead
My parents tell me I don’t need to be great
since I’m
only
a woman
That I should be like my mom
Let my husband make money, let him work, let him talk
I don’t want that
I WANT TO
MAKE MONEY,
WORK,
And
TALK

I don’t have this personally occurring to me, but I wrote it from experiences I have seen. Women in our world have had much more to deal with than men in many cases, especially in the past when women had no rights compared to men. I wanted to bring this into a specific story about a girl struggling with it firsthand. I thought it would be different to have her family be the ones to belittle her. I thought that it would have a greater impact and show how messed up the society really is.
