The ball of Judgement

I see the court

I see the tall kids, and feel short

I see the basketballs bouncing

I see the intense basketball being played

I made my way over to the court and introduced myself

I was put onto a team and began playing

I was guarding someone who was 5’10 and I was 5’3

I was immediately seen as too short to and bad at basketball

I felt like a NBA player

I took the judgment and used it as a drive

I played for 20 minutes

I did not get the ball once

I called for it tens of times

I finally received the ball and took the shot

I felt the ball flow off my hands like butter

I watched the ball fly through the air and it swished through the net

I kept calling for the ball and the players surprisingly started passing to me

I scored 20 points that game and

I left that court knowing I had done my part and had helped my team win the game.

I now know after this experience to never judge a book by its cover.

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem because of the unreasonable judgment that I received because of my height. Height has also been an insecurity of mine and felt like I really expressed that in this poem.
