Tryouts
Feeling nervous and scared
Wondering how I will do
I looked at my competition and almost said my adieus
Everyone was bigger than me,
But nothing I'm not used to
Coach yelled Line up! And we all filed in
Age and position, he talked extremely loud
When he got to me he assumed my age
Asking if I was a 7th grader when I was in 8th grade
No coach, I am an 8th-grader and his look was surprised
He said Wow! You’re a little short for your age
The other kids laughed
Filled with anger and rage
I lined up first to hit in his batting cage
I lined up with a smirk on my face
Knowing exactly what would happen
He aimed his arm and fired a fastball right down the middle
BOOM! The ball screamed off my bat and whizzed by coach’s ear
Ball after ball, he was impressed
Suddenly, the ball looked different, it was slower
I recognized the spin of a curveball, and again, BOOM!
The coach was impressed, even though he oppressed
When he met me for the first time
After all, You should never judge a book by its cover.

My name is Brendan Brill, and I play baseball as a freshman at Malvern Prep. This poem is about an experience I had at a club team baseball tryout.
