Why Us?
A dark alleyway that you, along with many have dared to go down
A hatred fueled from within
Why us?
What have we done to you?
Can we not be different
But treated the same?
Put yourself in our shoes
The shoes that you kept when we were gone
Thrown in a pile as a reminder of the massacre you created
Stripes on a reused jacket worn by many other people who are now eternally sleeping
In a river of lifeless bodies
Why us?
A bright yellow badge
Advertising unwarranted torture
We have done nothing
But our mere presence enrages you
Retaliation with no cause
Why us?
But that was a long time ago
It's different now, right?
History repeats itself,
And once again
You have retraced your steps and gone back down that dark alleyway
Why us?

My name is Sophia Schuman, and I write poetry because I want to connect with my readers about common emotions and feelings. My goal is for the readers to realize that they are not alone in feeling these emotions, and many people experience the same insecurities.
