The Dunes

Sand beneath my feet.

As far as you could see

Big hills, little trails.

Down for a week with all of our friends and family

Our campsite, filled with ATVs like a herd of elk ready to flee.

Roars from the motors, for many ongoing hours.

We go on long rides that take up most of the day.

We play

We go up tree shots

The sand sprays like a sprinkler making its way through where the grass lay.

We ride to the ice cream shop and get all the ice cream we crave.

Sun shining as the ice cream drips onto the table, it is a puddle.

Ready to hit that throttle.

Many times things break

Stuck for it feels like days

They can’t get out or they are broke down.

Me and my friend wondering when will we be able to go again

Us trying to be zen.

We visit the beach

We ride with the teens

We listen to music and we sing

We girls sit in the front, while the boys fill the truck.

With wood for the campfire

That makes the flames go higher like a hot air balloon being lifted in the air

But we also walk on the beach

Us girls gossip and talk as our feet sink.

The end of the trip is always something we don’t believe

Never want to leave.

But when we do we watch the sand fade away like when the clouds open up to make a nice sunny day.

And all the memories

Start to play.

The author's comments:

My poem is about going to the sand dunes a hobby my family and friends enjoy doing every year. It is something that is a big part of my life and is something that I really like to do. I have been riding since I was five years old and have improved throughout the years of my life. There are so many fun and memories and also many bad experiences within my life experiences riding in the dunes.
