It’s the first birthday without you.

It’s yours but it still hurts.

I never thought about losing you until it was too late.

It’s difficult to go through the day

Knowing I can't text you to tell you.

Knowing I won't ever get the chance to see you again,

Only in pictures.

Seeing you smile makes me smile.

Knowing I was someone who used to make me smile.

You made me smile a lot even when you weren’t fully there.

The cancer that took you, took you away too soon.

I only got to see you once after the hospital,

After that, you were gone.

Going and clearing out the house, 

Remembering the family gatherings,

The hide-and-go-seek games with the cousins,

And all the meals at that same table every Thanksgiving.

I miss you on days like this, 

You and your husband, my grandpa.

You both were so sweet to each other.

After grandpa had passed, you lost your spark.

I know you tried to stay strong and happy,

But I could see you were struggling.

It was just a little past your 80th birthday 

When we got the call, I saw you the night before.

You came a visited me, I know it was you,

I could sense it was you.

I love and miss you.
