confused thoughts racing too fast to file
a hard metal cabinet, gray as a cold sky,
as a cold heart.
it holds all he ever knew
a bullet hole through the middle
through the hard metal outside
penetrating what was left inside
a small lullaby lifts from the ruffled pages,
notes flying into the dusty air.
she snatches them and puts them in her pocket.
it won't reach ears.
