I said goodbye but didn't really mean it

We piled into the back of the SUV,
My chest aching, ears wailing, cheeks burning
Because I already knew he was those things
As she spewed them from her mouth like new terms,
Informing me so thoughtfully of the person he’d become overnight.
There are some memories
Etched so painfully
They still sting when the leaf
That covers them is overturned
By wind, or passing air.
I said goodbye but didn’t really mean it
