August 2022 Fiction Contest: Red
She dreams of iridescent crimson sunsets, of autumn leaves and vampire skies. She tastes the spice on her tongue like fizzing champagne, the rust hanging from the air like bloodstained linen. She showers in raining fireballs, in dragons’ hearts licking her skin, in souls of stars falling to heaven. Poppy petals tickle her tongue, imbrued with the ash of phoenix's wishes . She sees the sun as it implodes, a red jay as it sheaths its scythe. Her heart’s blood as it stains her hands. And when she closes her eyes, burning beneath her eyelids, she sees the end of the world.
