Standing in front of a mirror

I observe  my dark brown skin

Filled with blemishes and hyperpigmentation

Lips dry, and cracked with no color

Eyelids too dark for any eyeshadow to be seen

I must fix this

Grab the velvety smooth foundation in light beige

When I'm really a cappuccino

Grab the baby pink gloss as if I´m a bratz doll

When I'm really more of a berrier shade

Grab blue eye contacts

When I'm really a dark brown

There, I am finished

But where am I

Looking at the same mirror

I do not see those dark spot of hyperpigmentation

Or cracked lips reflecting no pink

But I also don't see me

It's like I am a whole different person

A figure of what society likes to see

Porcelain fair skin

Absolute no signs of being normal

Big round lips, overglossed with shimmers

Colorful eyes as if neutral is too boring

I will not let society shape me

Grab the foundation in cappuccino

When I usually lean to light beige

Grab the ripe berry matte lipstick share

When I usually lean to the light pink gloss

Remove those blue contacts

When I usually remove my clear ones

I will embrace my natural beauty

Hi, my name is Amruta I. and I am currently a rising freshman and am 14 years old. My roots and heritage trace back to the small villages in South India, where my parents were born. As a Indian American teenager life has a lot of obstacles to offer to try and get me to give up on my culture, but whenever I feel that way poetry is who I go to. I release all my emotions into a poem and it is my way of coping with stress and all the feelings in me. I love that poetry is so diverse just like the world around us, and it allows us to express ourselves and create an impact. Besides writing poetry I also learn and perform Indian classical dance, also known as Bharatanatyam. I started learning Bharatanatyam at the tender age of four and it has grown to become a part of me. I am very passionate towards Indian classical dance as it's further connected me to my heritage.

Very nice. I like how despite how many people like to say that wearing makeup at all is hiding yourself, you decided to use makeup to enhance the features you already have.
