Time Keeps Breaking

Time is as broken

As the pond that never freezes

Even when the days turn dark

And the temperature drops so low

That fires rage in rooms too small

For the number of people

Gathered around them

Everyone is trying

To soak up the warmth

Because they forgot

The world could get so cold

When time slows down

For just one day

And before we know it

Weeks have passed

We lament the days gone by

Surprised at how

They flew passed us

Cursing time

For being so broken

When we know

This has happened

Many times before

When we know

Time is no more broken

Than it's ever been

And always will be

The author's comments:

This poem started from a poetry prompt I was given in my literary magazine club, “Time is Broken”. We were supposed to write something about how we felt that time hadn’t been working properly since the pandemic started, and capture how we each felt about the days, weeks and years all blending together. I agreed with this, time didn’t feel normal to me, but when I tried to think of what normal time passing felt like, I couldn’t remember a moment when I didn’t feel like something was going too slow or two fast. And so I crafted this poem from my feeling that everyone was talking about how the pandemic broke time and no one was realizing that time had always felt this broken.
