Upon the Cliff

Upon the cliff, I look down

unbound by the burdens below

yet in this freedom, I realize

the horror of being allowed

to leap, to fall, to die,

though I surely never would.

Tomorrow’s sorrow pervades today,

even as the sunset fades fast

to shadows, to shapes, to shades,

painted across a serene summer sky.

Existence, essence, resolution.

Questions without answers.

A world that can only keep turning

and me atop this lonely cliff

caught between the despair and peace

of life’s longevity and death’s cold kiss.

Wow! This poem is breathtaking. Lines 3-6 are my favorite. Keep writing!
