2022 Traditions Contest: Far Into Rural Minnesota MAG
If you follow the rough asphalt and rock
Far into rural Minnesota,
Past the turkey farms and fields of corn,
A cabin sits on a low-lying property.
If you follow the property to where water laps against lanky stalks,
Smelling of lemon and thyme,
You will hear the growl of a floating engine
Send loon to the air.
If you follow the loon to the end of the dock,
Until you’re steps from dancing on the water,
The radiance of the sun
Will refract off nature’s mirror.
And if you look into earth’s seeing pool,
You will see
The cobalt sky and pear-colored grass.
The elegant birch and ink-black squirrels,
Far into rural Minnesota.
This is my mom's cousin's cabin that has been in their family for generations. During COVID, we grew closer with their family. Last summer, when we were able to get together, they invited us to share their family tradition. I felt relaxed for the first time in over a year. It was a gift.
