Does the caged bird open his throat to sing
and spread his arms though they clipped his wings?
Does the caged bird stand on his grave of dreams
because he never dares to cry?
Though the free bird thinks of another breeze
did he look at the bird and wished for please
that his wings weren’t clipped and his feet weren’t tied
or does the free bird wish to sing?

Does the caged bird sing with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
because the caged bird sings of freedom?
But is freedom that of an orange lit sky
or that his wings weren’t clipped and he could finally fly?
Is freedom him on the back of the wind
or is it simply that his feet are untied?

As the caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream.
Though his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
why does the caged bird sing?

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
but what does freedom look like?
