Fresh paint gleams on a starched white canvas,

abstract, colorful,

the disarray of dyes designing a delicate depiction of emotion,

purified by a back of bright snow-

America's painting may look the same,

an intermingling of colors, textures, lights

a blend of diversity to make a charming composition

a community of differences sharing their umbrella.

Yet the chroma is dark, rough

not like a smooth oil

not unlike a tube of dried paint

smeared unto a grainy slate

of hostility.
