Praising Chocolate
Always underestimated
Because they don’t match the glistening blue of the ocean
Not as rare as the blue and green gems others carry
Not like Alexandrite
Or blue Zircon
Never got complimented
Or pointed out
They’re like the shadows
That follow our every move
Like the amber honey we take advantage of
To sweeten our teas and fruits
Like the almonds
Stored in the back of my pantry
They allow me to see the colors that make up the world
That brighten life
Oh, the beautiful brown
Brown like my hair
That make people stare and comment
“What a pajón”
“Just brush it”
Or “Just straighten it”
How I always wished I had their blonde silky hair
Envy possessing my body
To burn the strands
That once looped in the air
To burn the pain
Of not looking like you
As the years, and months passed by
My sympathy grew
Oh, the beautiful brown
I am sorry
I felt as if I was freed
From the chains
As I let the hair loose
Let it create its own path
Oh, the beautiful brown
How glad I am
That I never let you go
