This is a frosted

confection:

icing whiteness in

droves, Donner Lake

lacquered

by mist,

the world torpid

in winter tresses—

heaven be the pearly

hills rolling like

snow gumdrops

and I am skiing

down the marshmallow sky or

the Sugar Bowl Resort.

Blue-lipped & panting,

recieve my crinkled

mocha eyes hidden

behind ski goggles.

Take my winded

mint breaths as gratitude

because you

are all I have left.

So cling to me

like powdered sugar

from our morning doughnuts,

clasp my shoulder

with that paternal palm

and on the aerial lift up again,

I will call you

Dad.

The author's comments:

Growing up in Los Angeles, I had never seen snow until I was invited up to Northern California one Christmas to stay with my uncle. I do not have the best relationship with my biological father, but I am eternally grateful for the time this man, my uncle, has spent with me and it is a tradition I will treasure for the rest of my life. "Skiing at the Sugar Bowl" is an homage to Tony, an outstanding role model to me and on occasion, a father figure as well.
