Cardigan
Remember the cardigan you knitted for me?
Turquoise it was, a tender hue.
And it scented of a warmth so known.
Sequined with your love,
It looked best on me.
My mocha skin held tight to it
Always. All ways.
So that it’d never be lost.
You laughed and often said
It had become my second skin.
That cardigan- that work of art-
I put it to sleep last night
Silently, beside you.
I wondered how all that was awake around me
Saw everything, but didn’t shed a tear.
Even the heartless epitaph read only one name,
And not the second.
Not that of... my second skin.
