Kayaking

The water ripples and remains undulated

Like flickered, yellow lightning situated

Across the sky

My heart pounds slightly rhythmically

A slight fear forms in my eyes frigidly

The yellow paddle, straight and horizontal, beats at the water

The sun sprinkles in; getting hotter

To move left, paddle right; to move right, paddle left

These instructions stop in my head; then resurface from their theft

The orange-red boat, lengthened as if a board, floats slowly

The water laps up at it showily

My arm stiffens and aches

From so much paddling… through the tranquil lake

I can’t keep going; I want to stop

And go home; to drop

Into the sofa

The wind keeps turning the boat back

Towards the bridge; floating in lack

Of direction

I soon hear a THUD!

Sounding as if a small flood

I’ve hit some rocks; need to get out

From kayaking; need to find an easier route
