I'm not like other girls

I don't wear make-up or like high-heels

I'm not like other girls

I don't fawn over boys and fantasize about being a princess

I'm not like other girls

I like books and school

I'm not like other girls

Right?

Because I have complex emotions and one will ever fully understand me

Because I like blue and not pink and know about politics

I have special connections and deep thoughts

I promise

I'm not like other girls

Except

Maybe I am like other girls

Because I want equality for women

I have dreams

I want a better world

And I want to be loved

Maybe I am like all the other girls

Like some girls, I menstruate

I go through the struggles that women and girls face every day

Maybe being one of "them" isn't actually all that had

Beacuse maybe we all are actually similar

Yet very, very different

Maybe

Just maybe we dehumanize women by saying that we are all the same until we prove that we are different

Why do I want to be different so badly?

It's not for attention from others

It's because of society

But more importantly because of me not seeing the flaws in this way of thinking

So yes

I guess I am like all the other girls

Because we are all strong and brave and beautiful and brilliant

We all stand together 

But also shine brightly as individuals

I am like other girls
