Marionettist
Invisible strings pull me in every direction
I’m the one that needs you, to move, to think
You keep me up right by pulling on those strings
And when your done playing with my broken pieces
My wooden limbs will fall against the stage;
I’ll become caged in my mind, wallowing in despair
Until a new marionettist comes along to pick up my parts
I’ll play my part in their story until I become the villain
And once again I’m left alone on the empty stage
No lines left to say, no more moves left to make
‘Til another lost soul sweeps me up off the floor
And the curtain opens once more; fast forward to the end
I’m broken in a tatter dress made from the script of our stories
I make amends to my paper dress with the tragic story of me and you;
And until I’m ready to cut the phantom strings that tie us together
I’m stuck dancing to the beat of someone else's drum

This was an assignment for my poetry unit in my creative writing class. The prompt was to pick a piece of artwork and write a poem inspired by it. Though it was inspired by a piece of artwork it holds a large emotional meaning to me as well.
