Ode to My Sister
My sister is a force of magic
She sits and whispers secrets of
how the girls in her grade kiss boys
and how she reads between the lines.
My sister tells me tales
of the newest fantasy book she read
and how they wave their fingers and create magic.
She tells me of a secret trip to Mazatlán
and how friends and her let the breeze trace their tresses
how she met a Mexicaná boy and fell in love.
My sister is the smartest person in the world
she knows every tree in the forest
and every star in the sky.
I ask her to tell me her favorite place on Earth
and she says “there are too many.”
My sister is the girl I want to be one day
beautiful like rose bouquet
mysterious like an unopened jar
wise like any tale teller.
My sister is an unpredictable wave.
We are all blips in the ocean breeze
drops of water vapor --- but she is a tsunami,
a tidal wave I’d like to be swept away in.
