A Wary Daredevil's Shibboleth
I savor driving alone
At night
Or in the rain
As long as I’m headed
Where I’ve been
Two million times before
Poised, willing to leap
Into the unknown
And feel the carbonated newness
Steal my breath away
Just as long as
I’m second in line
I’ll take the first marshy step
Into far-flung lands
Once I know the ground beneath
Is as solid as an oath
I’ll sip on the wine
That’s garnered rave reviews
And nibble the first bite
After you do
I’m a daredevil
I’m a tightrope walker
With two safety nets
I’m Houdini
With one chain link missing
If you deign to inform me
That my peril is concocted
Controlled, fabricated
Who knows? Things may just become
Perilous, indeed
