The Pain

I find myself in constant pain
My mind and heart feel as if
I deserve it
I do my best to protect
Those I care for from pain
I don't always succeed
But I try
The pain of being unable to breathe
The pain of loss and heartbreak
The pain of failure
The pain of endless tears
I pretend to be strong
I pretend to not care
I pretend to be okay
It's all surprisingly easy
I only show my pain in darkness
For the darkness is there when no one else is
Because I find myself in constant pain
