Don't wear makeup they say,

You look beautiful anyway.

So why do you call me names?
Why do you say I look ugly?
Why do you say I am not wanted?

Should I cake makeup onto my face?
To prove you all wrong,
Why can't you accept me?
Am I not beautiful?

Don't change your appearance they say,
You look beautiful anyway,

Then tell me why don't you accept me?
Do I need to be like those other girls?
Why do you treat me with such disdain and scorn?

I will tell you why.

You say I don't need to change,

Yet you call me ugly.
You say that I'm a walking disaster,

Yet you call me pretty.

Why is this world like this?

Where

both
si     des

are
oppo     sing,

   Di    vid   ded,

different,    unaccepting.

Can we not change this opinion, this view?

Yes, yes we can.

The author's comments:

I played with the structure of this poem and wanted to make it visual. This is inspired by a few of my friends who faced criticism about their appearance. We can fight together no matter how long it takes - I think this is an importantly thing to take away from this poem.
