"To these the past hath its phantoms,
More real than solid earth;
And to these death does not mean decay,
But only another birth"
- Isabella Banks

You see It

Among the two-dimensional forest of speckled white floors,

And the azure fields beneath your feet.

You see It

In the faux wood grain, passing beneath your fingertips like a cool stream-

The very same wood grain you stippled your cheeks across as a child,

Ridding yourself of the warmth and redness of recess.

You see It

Hiding in the lights, stark yet somehow inviting,

A familiar glow that lovingly reminds you to think clearly and proceed with power,

The fluorescent staves of light above you.

You see It

And you wonder how long it has been

Since you last sat in a desk, occasionally unamused, but not hurting.

How long, you wonder, how long was exiled from peace?

You see It

And you realize that you are beaming with life,

With a sense of normalcy and privelege;

Not every case is saved from the illness which overtook you.

You see It

In your acknowledgement of the absence of your fear,

The absence of your terror,

The absence of your disease.

You see It

In a corridor brimming with neon;

For once, you think, you see a bright doorway.

Had these existed before?

You see It

In your nostalgia-less memories,

You recall the tunnel that slowly grew around you,

Dark, unsympathetic, and shaded from the light.

There were other doors, you remember,

But none were as gleaming with hope as this door is.

You see It

Hinted to through a bubble-letter sign on a cork board.

Your future is etched plainly onto the poster ahead of you,

“Success “ displayed and adorned in bold, vivid letters.

You see every accomplishment, both small and grand,

And you recognize that you are repaired,

You have healed,

And your success is finding a home with you.

You see It:

The Hope you have for your future.

How much it means to a person healed

Of a lethal malady,

A malady you thought was terminal.

I am finally back in school, which I was absent from for 2 years (homeschooled instead) due to mental illness. I hope it empowers some of you!!!
