Oh Father
Oh Father,
Oh grandfather you came here
Seventy years ago,
To part yourself from the old world
You so long got to know,
With your last dime, you swept away
Remembering the past
Stepping on the ship and going
Away away at last
Stowed all day in steerage you lay
An alien you came,
Oh what to do or where to go
A better life was your aim,
Ode to the forest laid your mark
With pride and axe in hand,
Comensted the grueling daily chore
Making a life once banned
With callused hands I build this house
Twenty one years gone by
Not one dime left to my name
I’ve got no need to cry,
I give my son what I had not
A place to build life on
Seldom brothers had that to share
And so my life is gone
Oh father to you it was passed
Beautiful yard so rich,
Given to you and yours to own
You had to fill the ditch,
Grabbing a shovel, so began
This period of progress,
Building a life for me to use
Upon son the house was blessed
As rain, it falls through my fingers
Support and thought now gone,
With me was born a silver spoon
I carry it and yawn,
His bread passed down now mine to bare
In wheat contains the poison,
Consuming it now without a thought
Of the blaring illusion,
I had it all what was I thinking
Wasn’t this all mine,
My father's fortune wasn't for me
Oh no it was my son’s
I realize now what i had broken
Years of love and affection
What I give my kin is a golden table
With a crack right down the middle
