You saw it shimmer with the dawn,
A faerie ne’er-deceiving.
With eyes as wide as shadow long,
Tell me, when did you stop believing?

The faerie flits through fields of gold,
Its beauty e’er freeing.
You follow it in spellbound hold,
Tell me, when did you stop believing?

The faerie in a desert storm,
The image e’er retreating.
Its wings a thing with no more form,
Tell me, when did you stop believing?

A crushed hope dashed on cliffs of night,
The faerie ne’er seeing.
It has no life, it feels no fright,
Tell me, when did you stop believing?

But faeries die and life leaves quick,
The clock is e’er ticking.
If you breathe, despair is thick,
Tell me, when did you stop believing?

But with an end comes a new beginning,
The flame its candle e’er a-seeking.
With sun, the dust now thinning,
Tell me, when did you stop believing?

You saw it shimmer with the dawn,
A faerie ne’er deceiving.
With eyes as wide as shadow long,
Tell me, when did you stop believing?

The author's comments:

I was thinking about how sometimes people lose hope in other people or in their beliefs much too easily. Sometimes, they lose faith because something really tragic happens. Sometimes, they lose faith because of one harsh word. Next thing I knew, I had the first line to this in my head.

If anything, I'd like anyone who reads this to realize that although life can let you down, that doesn't mean you should lose hope. Where there is an end, there is another beginning.
