The Ones Who Gave up Eternity for Love MAG
The high school prophets made quite a stir when they spoke of the Promised Land
Even skeptics among them couldn't help
but follow what looked to be some
great numinous marching band:
The Prophets in front, believers behind, they marched just as far as they could go
I decided against it, but then again, after all, how could one really know?
The gullible crowds returned quickly after some weeks of fruitless flight –
They searched for the sacred fountain
of youth, but it was, of course, nowhere
in sight.
But everything turned when my greatest friend said he had heard a voice;
It called him West, and because he was
certain, we packed up and we rejoiced.
We set out not for glory, but to forever
touch the world
I was surprised, yet, when I discovered he intended to bring his girl.
They could not have been together for any time but a year or two,
But there was something incontrovertible between them; something that only
they knew.
There was really nothing to stop us as we went along our way
The three of us within an hour reached the entrance gates.
We burst in and I was first to drink my share, straight through and through
It was then we saw that the sacred fount
supplied for only two.
There was some left, and I thought that at the chance, one would be overjoyed,
But rather than choose, they walked back through as mortal girl and boy.
And I just couldn't quite comprehend as I looked to the sky above:
What would drive such a pitiful fool to give up eternity for love?
Now my friends have died and gone, and I still walk the earth;
When you've seen these many days, there is little of worth.
I once thought they were fools to set love as foundation for trust
Now, my soul, it simply rots; I am loved by nothing but dust.
