The Body

After the ceiling collapsed,

After the night relapsed,

Like all the times before,

The floodwater washed the floor.

Vines twist around the clock’s hands,

Choking the flow of sand.

I can finally see the sky,

And it looks golden in my eyes.

The lilies bloomed in the cracks

And in the wounds of my back,

Like stitches in my damp flesh,

A garden in the gory mess.

The honeybees all adore me,

Building their hives in my body.

As the petals break through my skin,

I realize I was always paper-thin.

Vines wind around my bones,

The skeleton I thought was stone.

I didn’t think I was so fragile,

Until I tried to learn to smile,

And all my teeth fell out,

And I was left with an empty mouth.

So I lay where I had once drowned,

Somewhere between the sky and ground.
