Survivor

Running
Running from them
The ones who destroyed your life

Your brother, your sister, your mother
All gone
Your father, gone too
You’re the only one who survived

Your life is in ruins
Your heart shattered in pieces
Yet you cannot cry
For tears do not come

Running
Running from them
The ones who destroyed your life

You’ll never stop
You’ll never give up
But you would welcome death
All that you lived for is gone

The only survivor
All alone in this world
Where nobody cares
Where nobody tries

Running
Running from them
The ones who destroyed your life

The author's comments:
This poem was inspired by a book I read for English class. It is about a girl, not even a teenager yet who's whole family is killed in the Rwanda Tutsi genocide of 1994. She has to find the will to survive on her own, and sometimes she has doubts and almost wants to die.
