Inhuman (a Villanelle)
To be inhuman is to be paid.
Bankers, salesmen, quants, brokers--
the sale must be made.
Feelings eradicated from 9 to 5,
the workplace is no place for jokers.
To be inhuman is to be paid.
Advertising is merely creative deception;
all products must be sold, even if they’re bad or mediocre.
The sale must be made.
Morphing customers into numbers on a vast screen.
Even a single mother of three, they’ll never empathize, never know her
To be inhuman is to be paid.
From luring customers with empty promises old and frayed,
To locking them in with a deposit--the old chain and choker,
The sale must be made.
For hundreds of years, humanity has continued this charade
The ultimate game of emotional poker.
To be inhuman is to be paid--
for the sale must be made.
