Before the Mourning

Smoke rings merge in evanescent grace
Curl down and settle around my face
THC and ephedrine
Bring to view a new dimension
While one intensifies the tension
The other slows the urgent pace

Intent in my philosophizing
Contemplating, theorizing
This insight pleasantly surprising
Discovery so tantalizing
Everything is mesmerizing
I spend my nights just realizing

I know this peace is temporary
Sifting through subconscious commentary
The stillness of the night surrounds
Me in a sanctuaric cloud
Inspired serenity abounds
Right now the silence isn't scary

But when the daylight begins forming
I prepare or the harsh scorning
That will ensue in the next hours
The sun will rise as the moon cowers
Frustration pours on me in showers
I know now why dawn is called mourning
