On the Battlefield

On the battlefield
With chemotherapy as our shield
Hope as our blunt sword
Without an outcome reassured

Unfortunately time
Reigns with the opposition
Four leaf clover
If the state is in remission

A battle where losing is inevitable
The bleakish horror is immeasurable
Where victory is a mere fairy tale
And all the saints bewail

An internal struggle; bloodshed
The fear of waking up dead
Suicidal attempts, emotionally bound
Waiting on the cure to be found

A mammogram;
the electronic watchman
Doctors can only do so little
But do everything they can

A fight fought by the unfortunate
Involuntary, 'Hitlers Diktat'
Circumstances force the weak to yield
Sad revelations on the battlefield

Hair loss, rather than life loss
Benign or malignant, the coins toss
Side effect of radiation
Less body cells than medication

No matter what you try
CT scan or MRI
The battlefield has no remorse
Not for a living soul; or decaying corpse

Stone cold; but truth be told
No matter how young or old
Engineer, accountant or dancer
Very few win
On the battlefield of cancer!
