"Why are you trying so hard to fit in? When you were born to stand out." - Ian Wallace

Born in May
A respected last name
The youngest of four
Always adored

16 happy years
Her next filled with tears
A birthday celebration taken away
A year filled with dismay

Ebi was trapped in a place of worship
Without sustenance
Held there for days on end
Finally taken away

Only two months then moved away
Ebi was resettled in mid-May
Shoved into train cars
Meant for beasts
Then she arrived

In June
Together passing as sisters
Mother and daughter move once more
To Plaszow labor camp

Moving boulders and rocks
Here to there
In September they have returned
To Auschwitz
Only to be displaced again

Her fingers go numb preparing ammunition
Nothing to fend off the frigid weather
Working their fingers to the bone
Working for little food

Then the bombs go off
They are evacuating minutes before rescue
Ebi, thought to be unsavable
Put to work again
Ebi, was shoved in to cattle cars once more
Moving up the snowy mountains
Preparing herself for the unknown expected in death
The guns go off

They are rescued by Allied troops
In April 1945
Ebi was free on May 1,1945
Best birthday present anyone could give

The author's comments:
Eulogy! Ebi was a holocaust surviver. She was set free on her 18th birthday.
