Afternoon at the Beach
Shafts of shifting golden light shimmered while
I plowed through the sea. As its salty scent lingered
I smiled, ready to fly, to float on fluffy clouds
That laced the turquoise sky. I did not worry
About wasted time, about
How I looked in my flowered one-piece, about
The filth that lurked in the waves that crashed
Upon my tangled hair, or even about sea monsters
Nipping my ankles. In only savored seconds
My parents folded their beach chairs and said,
“It’s time to leave.”
