A single tear slid down my face
As I turned to see the moon
Then slipped with tranquil grace
into the silver pool

The water wrapped around me
clinging to my skin
Trying hard to drown me
fighting its way in

I let a breath escape my lips
As I turned to see the moon
And felt my body sinking
into the silver pool

The water gently held me
as it rocked me slow to sleep
My weight too much to carry
so it softly let me sink

My eyes sparkled with a smile
Under the bright light of the moon
And I laid to rest awhile
At the bottom of the pool

It may seem a bit strange that this poem is about falling asleep because there is indicative in the text about the subject. Around seventh grade I was having a really hard time staying awake in class. Most kids say that, but this was different. I would fall asleep when people were talking to me, when I was talking, even once while I was standing up. This went on for about two and a half years until one day I feel asleep while driving and my mom decided it was time for me to see a doctor. We found a tiny malformation in my brain that sometimes disrupts my brainwaves. A sleep study showed that I do not enter REM sleep (the part of the sleep cycle where your brain actually rests) and probably hadn't for many years. Fortunately in the past few months I have been on a medication that regulates my sleep cycles. This poem reflects my struggle to stay awake, then the peace I found when I was finally able to sleep the right way.
