My oh my,
I see the ships passing by—
I want them to take me
I want them to make me
As the mermaids are when the sailor finds them,
I want to be as lovely as the one
That drowns him.
My oh my,
I see the cars passing by—
I want them to take me
I want them to make me
As the hitchhikers are when the driver helps them,
I want to be as gracious as the one
That thanks him.
My oh my,
I see the planes flying by—
I want them to take me
I want them to make me
As the birds are when the pilot outruns them,
I want to be as stubborn as the one
That beats him.
My oh my,
I see the spaceships flying by—
I want them to take me
I want them to make me
As the aliens are when the astronaut sees them,
I want to be as diplomatic as the one
That greets him.

My oh my,
That astronaut's gonna die.

This is just plain fun--especially the punchline (poor astronaut). :P

Humor in an unexpected place :) I love this poem. You have put into words the feeling of wanting to explore and to see the world and to understand and know what it's like to be another person in another place. This is wonderful! And plus the ending made me laugh.

First dentistry was painless.
Then bicycles were chainless,
Carriages were horseless,
And many laws enforceless.

Next cookery was fireless,
Telegraphy was wireless,
Cigars were nicotineless,
And coffee caffeineless.

Soon oranges were seedless,
The putting green was weedless,
The college boy was hatless,
The proper diet fatless.

New motor roads are dustless,
The latest steel is rustless,
Our tennis courts are sodless,
Our new religion — godless.

i mean below comment! dang stupid website:P

"We all fear death and question our place in the universe. The artist's job is not to subcome to dispair, but to find an antidote for the emptiness of existance." -Gertrude Stein in the movie Midnight In Paris.

It started out as a very interesting poem and it really pulled me into reading the rest of it and the very last line just made me laugh so much :) I love it :D
