Top Right Dresser Drawer
Top right drawer of the antique dresser
Yes, that right, that’s the one
The one that sticks when you try to open it
Don’t worry it should come out easily enough
If you just give it a slight tug
Once it used to slide out quickly, but that was before it was full of memories,
Birthdays cards, dolphin charms, agenda books, love letters, and photographs from my trip up north
From time to time,
when the feeling strikes
I sort through each and every whispering note, photo, or worn nic-nac
Remembering, smiling, and, sometimes
Crying
Take a look inside, At
Summer photos of my friends and me grinning most absurdly
And glossy hallmarks shouting “HAPPY SWEET SIXTEEN!”
What a collection I have,
Crumpled envelopes and loose papers shift over each other like grains of sand
Yet, one plain white letter does not move
It sits boldly up on top of all the rest
The envelope is a little torn, but time has not bestowed that rip
I did.
the letter says “I love you.”
The writer said “I lied.”
Please slide the dresser drawer shut
That’s enough for tonight
