To China

Away from Pre K at the beach house
Driving down the coast
Fisher price bucket and shovel
Sand like mortar
And buckets of water as heavy as bricks
But vacation in Martha’s Vineyard wasn’t where he wanted to be
A sandcastle wasn’t the adventure he was undertaking
He was going to China
By way of the hole
Dig, Dig, throw
The sand pile grew
His work was far from through
When he got there he would crash through the Great Wall
The terracotta soldiers would bow to his feet
As if it was him they had been waiting to greet
One day he would get there
Of that he was sure
But today was not that day
Water lapped at his feet
And his mother called “Time to go!”
